Baby Bed BeddingBaby bed bedding should be functional as well as good looking. Babies need to be warm and dry. They spend several hours a day in their baby bed. Bedding needs to be changes often to keep the baby happy and healthy. This means several sets of sheets and baby blankets are required. One of the most useful items you can give a new parent, or receive as one, is a receiving blanket. Receiving blankets can be used for warmth, shade, support and if necessary, as a burp cloth. Proper fitting sheets are also a must. You will need at least 3, more if you do not own a washer and dryer. Never use a flat sheet or loose-fitting sheet as they can cause strangulation. Also avoid waterproof or plastic sheets, which can cause suffocation. If you need extra protection this is another use for the versatile receiving blanket. Baby bed bedding is available by the piece, or in a set. Sets usually come in one of three amounts. A three-piece set includes a comforter, a fitted sheet, and a crib bumper. A four-piece set includes a comforter, a fitted sheet, a crib bumper and a dust ruffle. A six-piece baby bed bedding set includes a comforter, a fitted sheet, a crib bumper, a dust ruffle, a window valence, and a diaper stacker. It is difficult to choose from all the colors, patterns and designs available. You may want to choose a gender-neutral color, or wait until after the baby is born, unless you know the sex beforehand. Many stores will deliver or ship you purchase so it is an option to register a choice for both a boy and a girl, than notify the store to process the appropriate order after the baby is born. Before you use any new baby bed bedding it should be properly washed and dried. It is best to use a gentle detergent made specifically for babies, at least for the first few months. This helps prevent rashes from harsher detergents. Baby cloths and bedding can be washed with adult cloths and with regular detergent after that time. Be sure to measure the detergent and rinse properly. Cloth diapers are the only exception to this rule. Cloth diapers should always be washed separately. Most people use a diaper pail. Some people use this to presoak their baby’s diapers after they are soiled and before they are laundered. Any excess liquid should be poured off before putting the soiled diapers in the washer. Diapers should be washed on the hot cycle or at least the warm, with a cold-water rinse. Detergent should be used, preferably one that contains no phosphates, and only about half the amount suggested on the box. If your baby is prone to rashes, two rinse cycles may be appropriate. Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Dry cloth diapers for about 60 minutes on normal heat. Diaper covers should be washed separately. Disposable diapers of course are never washable and should be disposed of properly.
