Crib MattressThere is a lot to prepare for when you are having a baby, and one of the things that you have to do before your baby is born is choose a good crib and a good crib mattress. Over the years there have been many recommendations by pediatricians and parents when it comes to crib mattresses, but there are only a few simple things that you should consider. First of all and most importantly, a crib mattress should be made of non-flammable materials. Some people who are talented when it comes to sewing and crafting may try to make their own mattresses to put in the crib, and this is fine as long as they follow the guidelines when it comes to materials. The majority of parents simply buy their mattresses from stores, however, and can be fairly certain that the mattresses comply with regulations when it comes to fire safety. It is better to buy a mattress brand new than to buy one used, for obvious reasons. You also want to check any crib mattress that you are looking at for seam integrity, and make sure that there are no tears anywhere. Mattresses can be damaged in the factory or while they are being shipped to vendors and many times slight damage can be overlooked. Don’t be afraid to take a mattress out of the crib that you are looking at it and give it a good examination. If the store personnel do not want to allow you to do this, shop elsewhere. The mattress for your crib should be firm, but not too hard. Your baby doesn’t want to sleep on something that feels like a rock any more than you do, so use your best judgment. Push on the mattress to see how much “give” it has, and to see how well it bounces back. Ask the sales personnel about the type of material that is inside the mattress, and do some research on how well this material stands up to the rigors of a growing baby. It may seem like a strange thing to do, but you will want to also smell the crib mattress that you are considering buying. Mattresses are often treated with chemicals to keep them fresh and to keep the material from being damaged, but sometimes the chemicals can give off an unpleasant smell. If the mattress has a smell that is too strong, it could interfere with your baby’s sleep, or the fumes could even cause an allergic reaction in your infant. It would be rare for you to run into this type of problem with a mattress for a crib, but when it comes to your infant you always want to be as careful as possible. If you buy a good quality mattress for your crib, you should be able to use it for more than one child as your family grows. Each time you are going to use your mattress for a new baby, however, be sure to give it a thorough check to make sure that it has not been damaged by wear and tear.
