Crib MattressesUp to the first three years of your baby’s life will be slept in a crib, so shopping for crib mattresses is an important task that deserves appropriate consideration and thought. You must consider cost, comfort, longevity, and possibly convenience. With all of these factors in mind, you have two basic types of crib mattresses to choose from- foam and innerspring. The primary reason that parents will prefer a foam mattress to an innerspring style is simply the fact that it weighs less. This is where the level of convenience is measured. The lighter in weight the mattress is, the easier it is to remove when doing such tasks as cleaning the crib and/or removing and changing the linens. The foam crib mattresses not only weigh less, but they also cost less. There’s no doubt that most parents are wanting and willing to splurge for they new child, but most parents are also working on a budget. A budget that has to factor in diapers for the next few years, so anyway you can find to save pennies can be helpful. The foam mattresses themselves vary in price as they vary in thickness and density, and honestly, it’s the density factor that should weigh heavier when making you decision. Just because it’s thicker, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. A foam crib mattress is going to cost you anywhere from $80 to $100. The primary reason a parent may choose an innerspring mattress is the fact that they usually maintain their original shape longer. The number of coils, the number of times each coil turns, and the temper of the wire that the coils are made out of, are all contributing factors to the firmness of innerspring crib mattresses. It is suggested that you search for a mattress with a minimum of 150 coils. An innerspring mattress is going to cost you anywhere from $100 to $140. No matter which type you choose, foam, or innerspring, there are other features you need to consider when shopping for crib mattresses. Certainly, the size is important. You don’t want there to be a lot of space between the mattress and the side of the crib. That could allow for the baby to fall into the open space and suffocate. On the other hand, you don’t want to have to struggle squeezing the mattress into the crib, because then you will be facing the same struggle each time you have to remove it and put it back. Just make sure that you know what size you need. Firmness is also very important, which is why it is suggested when buying an innerspring style that there is at least 150 coils within it. You can test the firmness by simply using your hand to push down in the middle of it and squeezing the corners. Water-resistance is also important. To ensure quality in this feature, look for double or triple-laminated ticking, preferably reinforced by nylon. Also, look for crib mattresses that have vent holes. Venting keeps foul odors from being trapped inside the mattress.
