Down Comforters

When you are shopping for bedding, you may run into something called down comforters.  What are down comforters made of?  They are made of the down feathers of birds (usually duck or goose).  The down feathers are those that are the fine layer under the tough outer layer of feathers.  If you have ever seen a baby duck and thought how soft they looked, that is because they are covered entirely in down feathers.  Down is used today in many things including comforters, jackets, pillows, and sleeping bags.

What is so great about down comforters?  They are well insulated, but also lightweight.  They are not bulky like many comforters.  Eiderdown comforters are those that are made with down from the nests that mother ducks have abandoned. These down feathers are those the mother has actually plucked from her breast to keep her eggs warm before they hatch.  Eiderdown comforters are highly desirable but there is a limited supply of Eiderdown each year, so an Eiderdown comforter can cost in the thousands of dollars.

What should you look for when shopping for down comforters?  You will want to check the label for fill power.  The fill power is determined by the size of the feather clusters and the space in between them.  A higher fill power means the down comforter has a higher loft and is of better quality than down comforters with a lower fill power.  Some people consider 500 and above a high fill power, but many other businesses insist that you must have 650 – 750 fill power to get a quality down comforter.  You will also want to check to see the thread count of the comforter.  With a higher thread count, the material of which the comforter is made will be much softer.

When you purchase a down comforter, you will find that it is very comfortable and provides a great night of sleep.
