Fine Linens

Did you know that the average person spends almost 30 years of their life in bed? This could be one of the many reasons that today’s fine linens are flying off the shelves. These high quality items can be found just about anywhere that your every day sheets, towels and blankets are sold, but while finding them will be easy, caring for them may require a little more effort. Improper care of the expensive little treats will quickly make you wish that you’d never spent that pretty penny on them in the first place.  Many of the materials, such as the extra strong, incredibly soft, Egyptian cotton that is used to make the majority of today’s most luxurious bed linens is going to require a little extra time and effort in the laundering department.

The first thing you should do before you dive into the amazing softness of your new, lavish bed sheets is wash them. Just because they cost you four times what you paid for your last set, doesn’t mean they’re not going to have the creasy, new feeling when you take them out of their packaging. While it’s always a good idea to check the individual item for any manufacturer specifications, if all else fails, just remember, the best sheets are clean sheets, no matter what thread count they are. After their initial wash and use, you should change your sheets once a week to help prolong the life of them. Having three sets of sheets in rotation (one on the bed, one in the wash, and one in the closet) is the ideal way to help keep your sheets looking their best year after year.

Start by selecting the gentle or delicate cycle, as these types of items are the reason they were created. Once the washing machine is full and agitating, add your gentle detergent, or fine lined wash before adding your linens. This will help to ensure that the detergent gets evenly distributed among the entire load. Also, separate your loads into light and dark colors and try to keep them fairly small so that your fine linens will have plenty of room to circulate. This will not only allow them to get cleaner and come out with less wrinkles, but it will help prevent some of the longer fibers, like those in Egyptian cotton, from becoming damaged or broken.

Unless otherwise specified on its garment tag, most fine linens should be washed in warm water and rinsed in cold. You may also want to consider running the rinse cycle twice to remove any left over soap, as it can decrease their softness. Make your best effort to get them out of the wash and into the dryer as soon as they’re ready. This, along with giving them a good shake on their way, will not only reduce wrinkles, but it can cut down on drying time too. Finally dry them on a cool, low setting which will minimize fiber damage as well as helps them come out looking fresh and smooth. Proper care is essential to the life of your linens.
