Bed FrameBed frames have evolved as much as the beds that sit on top of them. If you had been an Egyptian Pharaoh your bed frame might have been carved from ebony, or gold. There was a time in commoner’s history when bed frames were unheard of. Bed frames weren’t needed because beds consisted of nothing more than a sack of straw or feathers laid out on the floor. Besides the use of insecticides, infestations of bed bugs made it necessary to use bed frames to get the beds up off the floor, although the pesky bug problem still persisted. Anyway, you can imagine the problem of sleeping on one of those primitive beds rather than a mattress on a bed frame, and dealing with mice scurrying across your bed in the middle of the night. When the late nineteenth century ended, you almost had to be a rocket scientist to put together a bed frame. At the very least, knowledge of putting jig saw puzzles together would have been helpful, as in order to put a bed frame of that time period together seemed much the same method. These days a bed frame holds up the entire bed. A box spring fits down into the bed frame, and a mattress goes on top of the box spring. Sometimes, the bed frame isn’t really noted as having the best looks, and many times it is concealed with a dust ruffle. A bed frame comes in different sizes and shapes to accommodate the bed. A slatted wood base is the bed frame that is used to support a platform bed, and if the size of the bed is large there may be added wooden legs in the center to give the bed further strength. Luxurious bedroom furniture has become more fashionable, and the bed frame at times has been designed with this in mind. A bed frame can be hand carved from any kind of wood, or hand forged or cast from iron.
