Metal Bed Frames

A bed is made up of several different components.  There is the mattress, the box spring, the head board, the foot board, and the bed’s frame.  While shopping for each of these components it is important to look for safe and durable materials, it is especially important to look for safety features in your metal bed frames.

Our homes are filled with safety issues, and the bedroom is no exception.  In the bedroom one of the biggest safety hazards is the bed.  While the bed is supposed to be where we can rest and relax, it actually can offer to us more than a good night’s sleep.  First the mattress can offer bacteria and molds a place to grow and multiply, secondly the mattress can pose a suffocation hazard or an entrapment hazard if it is worn out and saggy, and finally the bed and mattress can pose a serious fire hazard.  However, while all of these hazards are possible, one of the most hazardous components of a bed is the bed frame.

Bed frames offer several hazards.  The first hazard that bed frames present to consumers is that they are made up of materials that can be harmful or toxic.  For example frames made from particleboard or plywood can sometimes contain formaldehyde or other toxic chemicals.  Secondly, wooden bed frames are highly flammable.  And finally all bed frames pose some threat of abrasions and contusions to the body.  To help minimize these threats you may want to consider purchasing metal bed frames instead of wooden frames.

Metal bed frames are safer than wooden bed frames for several reasons.  First they are not flammable.  Secondly metal frames offer more durability than wooden frames, and they are less likely to collapse or splinter.  Finally, metal frames don’t contain toxic components like formaldehyde.  All of these basic characteristics make metal frames safer than wooden bed frames.

When you are shopping for a metal bed frame you can improve your bedroom safety by looking for additional safety features.  First look for a bed frame that offers corner guards on the frame.  These guards are generally plastic caps that cover the sharp edges of where the frame’s sides come together.  These guards will protect your shins and feet from cuts if you happened to bump up against them while walking by the bed or when making the bed. The second safety feature that you will want to look for is a cross support bar.  Cross support bars generally fit in the corners of your bed frame.  They offer extra stability and strength.  The third characteristic to look for is a system of connecting bolts.  These bolts, or pins, should be designed to secure the sides of the frame securely together.

It is important to look for safe and durable products for you home.  Safe and durable products are important to not only protect your own safety, but to also protect the safety of your family and guests.  When shopping look for items that offer both the basic security design features required by law, a well as extra safety design features that the manufacturer deems important.
