The Murphy bed was created by William L. Murphy. Murphy lived in California in the late 1800s. He only had a small apartment that consisted of one room. It was very hard for him to entertain and have guests in his apartment because his bed was taking up a lot of space.

Murphy started experimenting with ways he could have a bed without it taking up so much of his small living space. He applied for his first patent around 1900 and The Murphy Bed Company was formed shortly thereafter.

The folding Murphy bed reached a peak in its popularity during the early part of the 20th century. The Murphy bed declined in popularity during the 50s and 60s when people were not overly concerned with trying to save space. The Murphy bed reached popularity again in the 70s as families grew in their small homes and needed to the convenience of the space saving Murphy bed. The later part of the 20th century saw a continued growth in the sales of the Murphy bed as the company introduced cabinetry and wall units into the mix. No longer was the Murphy bed just a bed, but it became a piece of furniture.

The Murphy bed can be purchased in twin, double, queen and king sizes. The Murphy bed is very popular among city dwellers. As more and more people move into studio apartments and small living quarters in metropolitan areas, the logical choice for them is the Murphy bed. It enables them to have their bed when they need it, and to have a living area when they are not sleeping. You can find Murphy beds most any bedding store from coast to coast.
