Sleigh Bed

A sleigh bed is elegant, beautiful and useful – all three rolled in one. Some reports say that the sleigh bed was first seen around 1800 where it was considered an excellent Victorian style bed.  The first pieces were carved out of the best mahogany veneer and had both the headboard and the footboard arches ending in rolled-over upper ends.  The rolls were done either inside or outside depending on the preference.

As with most artistic things of that time, the sleigh bed too originated in France at the time when Napoleon Bonaparte was the Emperor.  The specific elegance of that age reflects in the beauty of that furniture for which it was dubbed as the Empire Style. Initially the sleigh bed was not that large. It was rather used as a stand by bed and measured almost roughly as a day bed.

In the beginning of 19th century, the sleigh bed had caught the fancy of everyone. As the time advanced, the excellent wood that went into the making of the sleigh bed initially was replaced with other materials, such as fiber, aluminum, wrought iron, etc. There have been instances where the sleigh bed have been made out of even leather or had a good amount of leather decorations.

There are many ways that a sleigh bed can be fashioned in. Some are with the headboard straight and the rolls and waves at the feet side and some could have these decorations vice-versa. The headboards of the majority of these types of beds will always have a taller headboard and a smaller foot board.

There are plenty of variations today, which have made the sleigh bed quite different from what it was in the beginning. Now it can be easily adapted to the bedroom, complete with drawers up and box drawers underneath. In order to obtain the greatest ambiance, you can order all the other furniture pieces to coordinate.
