Mattresses with springs will always have a fatal flaw (as illustrated). To get
a spring to compress further and further, you have to put a bigger and bigger weight on it. Some parts of your body, such as your hip or shoulder,
need to sink into the mattresses further than recessed parts, such as the waist area of your torso or your back. Your deep-sinking parts compress
the springs further, and support far too much of your weight.
The result is painful pressure on your hips and shoulders and not enough pressure
(lack of support) for your back. Doctors have (until now) specified firm mattresses for bad backs so that at least the overall mattress won't
sag into a hammock shape -- but this very firmness itself causes spine sagging. If the hips and shoulders can't sink in, the narrower torso is
unsupported and its weight will cause the flexible spine to sag until the torso presses more firmly into the mattress.
Intelli-Gel is made from many hollow columns of soft very strong -- rubbery gel.
Each column is attached to surrounding columns. A column has a unique engineering principle called "column buckling". This means that
a column will take a certain amount of load, but then if the load gets any higher, it will become unstable and the walls will buckle (crinkle)
and give way. Unlike springs, our rubbery columns do not continue to build pressure as a deep part of your body sinks in, because before it gets
to be uncomfortable, the load is relieved by buckling.
Each rubbery column is like a sentry that is a guard against too much pressure.
When pressure begins to get too high, the sentry's knees buckle and he refuses to carry any additional load. The other sentries pick up the load
that he refuses to take. These other sentries are under areas of your body that don't jut out, like your back.
The result of having these "sentries" ends up with equal support and pressure… everywhere. That means that even areas that don't
jut out, like your back, get full support… without having to sag to get it. Your spine stays straight, and your back feels unstressed and
