Adjustable Bed MattressesYou’ve seen the commercials: a couple is laying in bed, one of them is pressing a button on a remote control, and the entire back of the bed raises up so that they are both in a semi-sitting position. Adjustable bed mattresses are becoming more and more popular among consumers, especially those who find it difficult to be comfortable on a standard coil mattress. Adjustable beds, also known as Semi-Fowler beds, became popular with consumers beginning in the 1960’s, and have a mechanism inside that allows them to be moved into several different positions. While different brands have their own specifications, most of them are similar in that the back half can raise up to allow the sleeper’s upper half to rest on an incline, and the front half curves around the shape of the back of the legs so that they are bent. Motors inside the mattress maneuver the different areas around to create the desired position, and these are directed by a remote control. They can come in a coil variety or can be made out of other materials such as foam and latex, and options include heating and massage functions, both of which can be controlled by using the remote. This type of mattress has been extremely helpful in medical situations, especially in places where the patients have a lack of mobility, such as hospitals or nursing homes. Not only do they provide a more comfortable surface on which to lay for people who spend a great deal of time in bed, but they also aid nurses in that the beds can eliminate some of the manual handling of the patients, thereby reducing the risk of back injuries. Adjustable beds can be therapeutic as well, as their range of motion can help exercise some of the joints of severely bedridden patients by moving them around. In addition, many back pain sufferers report that adjustable beds help alleviate the discomfort they normally experience when lying in a normal bed. Those who benefit from this technology are people who are more comfortable while inclined, as opposed to lying flat, such as those afflicted with Osteoarthritis and Spinal Stenosis. Additionally, many who have had lower back surgery prefer an adjustable bed mattress over a standard flat one for greater comfort. And, if a person feels comfortable sleeping in the reclined position at night, it can be beneficial to the spine by supporting its curves, and also act to relieve pressure on the rest of the body. Some people find that they are unable to sleep in this position however, so in this case they can use the remote to lower the bed down to the flat position when they are ready to go to sleep. Adjustable beds come in a variety of sizes and styles, so the odds are good that a person can find the combination that he is looking for when shopping for one. A great choice for both the medically challenged as well as someone who is simply looking for a more comfortable way to watch television in bed, this mattress style has been a favorite of consumers for many years.
