Best Mattress

Shopping for the best mattress depends on several factors, most importantly individual preference. Know what you should look for and consider when choosing the best mattress for you.

Sleep is one of the single most important factors that contribute to a person’s overall health. While there are several factors that affect a person’s individual sleep habits, such as caffeine consumption, stress levels, and other health issues, having the best mattress for your personal comfort is a serious mitigating factor to sleep quality. It’s important to understand that the best mattress for your needs may be entirely different than someone else’s.

Size

In order to get the best mattress for you, you have to consider the size of your bed. If you co-sleep with a bedmate, you might be disturbing each other’s sleep due to lack of room. If your budget allows, consider a queen size mattress, which is ample room for two people and definitely an improvement over a full-sized for co-sleeping. If you have young children and employ the family bed philosophy, you might even want to consider a king sized bed.

Comfort

Once you’ve nailed down the right size mattress, the next factor for choosing the best mattress is comfort. If you require a great deal of support, experience back or neck pain when waking, or are a restless sleeper, your current mattress may not be providing the comfort you need for a good night’s rest. Some people prefer a firm support mattress, while others want to sink into softness. Testing out different firmness factors is the best way to experience the possibilities short of sleeping on them. Consider the positions you currently sleep in most often and test mattresses out in those positions.

Cost

If budget is a factor, you probably won’t sleep well if you spend more than you can afford on a new mattress. There are a wide variety of price ranges applicable to mattresses and the best mattress doesn’t have to be the most expensive one. Similarly, very cheap mattresses might not be the quality and comfort you are looking for and buying one based on cost alone might be like trading money for more sleepless nights. Allow yourself at least $200 leeway in your budget for a new mattress and you might be surprised to see how much difference in comfort you can recover for the money.

Comparison shop by both brand, firmness, and cost before you buy. Ask friends with different mattresses what they like about theirs. When you consider that you sleep on your mattress every single night of your life and taken into account how important sleep is, you’ll be more inclined to take the time to find the best mattress for you, even if it does seem like a laborious process.

Be sure to visit several showrooms and retailers before you purchase your new mattress and compare the deals you find. You are free to negotiate with a retailer if you find a better deal on the same mattress elsewhere. Don’t forget to acknowledge the value of incentives such as free set up, frame, or removal that many retailers offer with a new purchase.
