Foam Mattress Pad

Most American adults have difficulties sleeping.  This difficulty can be linked to being overstressed, as well as to having an uncomfortable mattress.  One inexpensive way to improve the comfort of your mattress is to use a foam mattress pad.  These pads vary from simply egg carton designs, to complex multi-zoned firmness and contour zones.

To select a foam mattress pad you will first want to decide on how much money you want to spend on your pad.  These pads range from about $20 for a basic design to over $100 for a multi-zoned foam and gel model.  Prices will also vary by market, so you may need to shop around to find the best deal on the model that you want.  If you can’t find a design that you like, you may need to talk with a medical supply company, or to your local bedding store to see if they can special order you a design that you are interested in, or if they don’t typically carry pads then they may be able to direct you to a company that does.

The next thing that you will want to look for when shopping for this item is that it is right for your mattress.  First, to fit your mattress the pad will need to be the right size.  Mattress pads are generally sized by mattress size standards such as twin, queen, full, and king. Secondly you will want to make sure that your mattress cover will be able to handle both your mattress and the foam mattress pad.  If you want to buy a thick foam pad then you may need to buy a new mattress cover.  Finally you will want to take into consideration how much additional support and plushness your mattress needs.  A good mattress should not need much help, while low-end mattresses could greatly benefit from a high-end mattress pad.

After you have selected the foam mattress pad that you want to buy your next step will be to install it on your bed.  This is a very easy thing to do, and you should be able to do it yourself.  However, if you have an extra large bed, or if you have mobility issues you may want to enlist the help of a friend or family member.  To install your pad simply remove your comforter, blankets, and bed cover from your bed.  Then place the mattress pad on the bed.  Next place the mattress cover over the pad and secure the cover to the bed by tucking the ends of the cover under the corners of your bed.  Then simply make your bed as usual.

There are many health benefits of using a mattress pad.  First it helps to relieve pressure points on your body while you are lying in bed.  Secondly it provides you with a more comfortable sleeping surface which will help you to get a better night’s sleep.  Finally the pad is generally made from antimicrobial materials that will protect you from dangerous macrobiotic organisms that can form on mattress covers.  With all of the health advantages that foam mattress pads offer to consumers, it is easy to see why they have become such a popular item.
