The word mattress essentially means cushion.  While most of us think of a mattress as simply something we use to put on our bed and sleep on, there are other kinds of furniture that uses mattresses to provide comfort and support as well.  Perhaps the most common of these kinds of mattresses are used for the dining room chairs.  Many people opt to buy a mattress or cushion for these chairs to help provide extra comfort while dining and for their guests.  They usually have strings attached to them which are used to tie to the chair so they do not fall off. Couches also require mattresses, and many furniture stores sell a wide variety of mattresses or cushions for many different styles and sizes of couches, as well as mattresses for pull out sofas.  These kinds of mattresses are usually specially made, and are a lot narrower and thinner than a traditional mattress.  This is why they can often only be found at furniture stores.

Another kind of furniture mattress is the futon mattress.  A futon is similar to a couch but it typically is consisted of a metal frame and can easily be folded out into a bed.  Futon mattresses are also specially made so that they can easily be “folded” in and out of different positions.  Another type of furniture mattress is the mattress used for a baby’s crib.  Again, unlike bed mattresses, these are a special size and often a special material as well.  There are many other kinds of furniture mattresses in addition to those listed here.  Whether you are seeking out a mattress for your bed or another piece of furniture, it’s easy to see that the mattress is not just meant for sleeping.  They provide comfort and many uses for various pieces of furniture throughout the house.
