Futon MattressThe Past Futon mattresses originate from Japan where these were actually used as two inches mattresses to sleep on the floor (which is called tatami). The futon mattresses were used for sleeping in Japan; while in day time they would be removed from the floor either to store them or to sun them. The futon mattresses were regularly dusted since they gather dust quickly. The Present The present day futon mattress (for the West) is constituted for the bed instead of the floor and these are not to be removed unless the bed is a temporary fixture. As a matter of fact, often the futon would not mean mattress when mentioned in US; rather it would refer to the frame. In some places the futon mattress is used as a bed itself, while in most cases they are are used as just mattresses. In the West, the futon mattress is thicker and larger – much closer to the Western counterpart rather than the Japanese style. When you are looking to buy a futon mattresses ensure that you get the right one for your bed. The greatest importance should be given to its flexibility, weight, and rigidity of the futon mattresses. In the Western world, the ideal futon mattresses are about 8 to 9 inches thick, unlike their Asiatic counterparts which will be some 2-3 inches. When the futon mattresses are thin and used in between, they require constant attention in terms of airing, sunning, scrubbing, etc to prevent accumulation of dust and other allergens. You also need to choose the right material for your futon mattresses – it should basically be of fire retardant material, easy to wash and easy to dry and easy to dust from time to time.
