Latex MattressMany of the new foam mattresses today are made of latex. Even traditional mattress companies such as Sealy have begun making latex mattresses. These mattresses are therapeutic and can provide you more orthopedic support than many other mattresses. Latex is a type of natural rubber made from the sap of rubber trees. However, during World War II, scientists discovered how to make synthetic latex. Most latex mattresses today are made of a combination of natural latex and synthetic latex. The life span of a latex mattress is between 18 and 20 years – much longer than traditional mattresses, which have springs inside. In that time, you should not experience any sagging or body impressions on your mattress. Why are latex mattresses so popular today? Latex is dense, normally four pounds per cubic foot in density. They are bouncy and soft, but do not leave an impression. There are two different methods for making the core of latex mattresses. The Dunlop method is one in which the latex is whipped with air to make a foam. That form is then poured in a mold to make the mattress. The second method, the Talalay method, is more involved as the latex is frozen and heated, then the pins in the mold remove air pockets and bubbles. If the core has larger holes in the core, the mattress is softer. Some cores are made with different sized holes in different places. For example, the holes at the shoulder area may be larger to provide more comfort, but the holes at the legs and feet area may be smaller to provide a firmer mattress. When shopping for a latex mattress, as the salesperson questions such as what type of synthetic is used (natural, synthetic or a combination of the two) and how the latex was made (Dunlop or Talalay method). If you want a mattress that is less dense, you will probably prefer those made with the Talalay method. If you are not sure which one you would like, try lying down on the floor models to see which feels more comfortable.
