Magnetic MattressAs holistic remedies become more popular in this day and age, many consumers are turning to magnetic mattress pads in an effort to promote overall bodily health. They consist of normal mattress pads that contain many small, specially designed magnets which are placed in certain positions to get the most out of the magnetic effect. The producers generally lay the high strength magnets out in a balanced pattern, in order to reduce the fluctuation of the magnetic field. Each magnet is surrounded by some sort of padding, typically foam, so that the sleeper can not feel them while he is lying on the pad. Magnetic mattress pads also come in visco foam, also known as memory foam, for extra comfort. According to the magnetic mattress pad manufacturers, there are many benefits to using their products, among them an improved circulatory system and an increased amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. They also claim that these pads reduce the level of stress that the body’s cells undergo, in turn reducing the oxidation process. This is a reaction that happens when oxygen combusts within the human body and produces particles called free radicals, which are molecules that are missing an electron. These particles want to become whole again, so they in turn steal an electron from a cell within the body, damaging or even destroying it. This is what causes aging. Some also say that magnetic mattress pads reduce the body’s acidity, and make it more alkaline. Over acidity is said to be a dangerous condition which can weaken the body’s systems, and causes it to be more vulnerable to disease. The body is thought to have a reserve of alkalinity, and when it has to expend too much in an effort to combat the acidic level of the body, one can become weakened. Another purported benefit to sleeping on magnetic mattress pads is that they are said to change the structure of calcium molecules in the body to eliminate the effect of calcium buildup on joints and bones. The manufacturers of these pads claim that this helps stave off arthritis. The way to use a magnetic mattress pad is to place it on top of the mattress, and on top of any other mattress pads that are on the bed, but underneath the bottom sheet. The pads also come in a pillow size for insertion between the pillow and pillowcase. Most manufacturers make sure that all of the magnets are placed so that the north poles are the sides facing the body, as some people say that exposure to the south side of magnets increases the growth rate of cancer cells. Others deny this theory, and magnetic mattress pad manufacturers are also making “bipolar” mattress pads, where some magnets are north side up and some are south side up. Whatever one’s beliefs are as to the healing power of magnets, there is a lot of information available on the subject, and there are many products available which are purported to take advantage of the magnetic properties of these devices. Consumers should do their own research and decide if magnetic mattress pads are right for them.
