Mattresses FirmIt has been long believed that people who have bad backs should sleep on a hard surface. This presumption was based on the claims made by people who had suffered from a bad back who slept on the floor or on a board and their symptoms improved. While scientists don’t negate the possibility that hard sleeping surfaces may be beneficial for some bad back problems, recent studies examining the effects of sleeping on mattresses firm compared to softer surfaces have shown contradictory results. A study conducted by a Spanish researcher conducted back in 2003 examined about 300 adults that suffered from chronic back pains. At the beginning of this experiment the test participants were asked about their back condition and how it was interfering with their life. Then the researcher replaced the test subjects’ beds with either a firm inner spring mattress or a medium-firm inner spring mattress. After three months the test subjects were given the same questions to answer. The findings of the study showed that those people who were given the medium-firm inner spring mattress showed more physical improvements than those people who were given the firm inner spring mattresses. In fact it was shown that the people with the medium-firm inner spring mattresses had reduced their dependency on over-the-counter pain medications, they had been getting more sleep, and they were experiencing less back pain in the morning and during the day. While the results of this particular study did seem to suggestion that mattresses firm are not as beneficial as it was once thought, the results did not produce overwhelming evidence that supported less firm mattress was the solution to back problems either. In fact, instead of increasing the amount of understanding that we have about sleeping surface firmness and back problems, it seems to have increased the number of questions that we have about this issue. Because of the new questions that this study has brought up it is important to continue exploring this topic. Future researchers may want to focus on specific back problems and how they respond to varying firmness levels in their mattresses. This may help to find connections between the effects of mattresses firm and specific back problems. If you have back problems and you are thinking about buying a new mattress you might want to look into the most current research findings on the topic of mattress firmness and back pain relief.
