Pillowtop MattressPillowtop mattresses are available from most major manufacturers and come in three quality levels: standard, premium and luxury. These levels are based upon the amount of support that they provide, as well as the type of padding used. The materials used, the construction and depth of the mattress support and mattress comfort layers all determine mattress firmness. Mattresses are made in layers. The first layer of an innerspring mattress is the coils or springs. The coils are arranged in various ways to provide firmness for back support. The wire in the coils comes in different thicknesses. Usually a lower gauge number means thicker stiffer wire and a firmer mattress. The coils or springs are covered by insulation padding to prevent damage to the other layers, as well as to protect the coils themselves. Next comes the middle padding. This is usually made of foam and covered with cotton batting. The cotton batting may vary in thickness and this is what causes the mattress to feel firmer in some areas, such as the middle. The outer layer of the mattress is called the ticking. It is usually polyester or a cotton-polyester blend. It may also be latex, if the person has allergies or suffers from asthma. The very top layer influences the comfort of a mattress. The comfort or softness of a mattress is usually described as being cushion firm, plush, ultra plush, pillowtop, ultra plush pillowtop and euro-top. The pillowtop mattress is usually quilted with the foam attached to the mattress in a design that is similar to a featherbed. The pillowtop mattress design allows the foam to conform to you body as you sleep, while still giving you support. The pillowtop mattress provides more cushion than the firm or plush model, and has become one of the best selling mattress in the past few years. A good quality pillowtop mattress will provide proper back support and help reduce pressure point problems. The pillowtop is attached on both sides of the mattress and is as durable as any other style. You may be required to purchase special sheets to fit your pillowtop mattress if you purchase the premium or luxury models. Pillowtop mattresses are also available for airbed and memory foam mattresses ensuring the right comfort level for anyone. After you have purchased your new pillowtop mattress there are several things you can do to prolong its life. You should reposition your mattress every six months to make sure that it wears evenly. This includes rotating it 180 degrees. Many pillow top mattresses are “no-flip.” This means you do not need to turn them over. Check with the manufacturer if you are not sure. With proper care, your pillowtop mattress should remain comfortable for several years. It will wear out though, so watch for sags in your bed, or pains in your body after getting up. This is a sign it is time to go shopping again. Be sure not to keep sleeping on a mattress that no longer gives you a comfortable night of sleep. Remember that while care can make them last longer these mattresses will not last forever.
