Sleeper MattressEveryone wants a good nights sleep. Everyone sleeps differently. No matter what type of sleeper, mattress choice is key to a restful night. What mattress you choose should compliment your nighttime habits and allow you to sleep well and awake refreshed and pain free. Material is the first consideration when choosing a mattress. Choose a material that is durable, and that will last for several years. A good mattress should last at least seven years. Cotton, wool, latex and other natural materials have recently become popular mattress materials. Keep in mind that mattresses should not be cleaned with any type of liquid. Mattress pads should be used to provide additional comfort for the sleeper, mattress protection, and to prolong the life of the material. Latex mattresses are beneficial to those with asthma or allergies. They are naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites. They do cost more, but your health is important. The second consideration is firmness of the mattress. This will determine how well you sleep, and how good your body feels when you get up the next morning. Support and comfort is not necessarily the same thing. If you are a back sleeper, mattress firmness will be different than if you sleep on your side or stomach. Innerspring mattresses generally provide the most support, but advances in foam technology may make memory foam mattresses more comfortable to those with back pain. The third consideration when choosing a proper mattress is size. Mattresses are available in twin (also called single), full (also called double), queen and king sizes as well as some larger specialty sizes. Though not quite big enough for the average adult sleeper, mattress size for a twin bed is 39” wide by 75” in length and is perfect for a child. A double mattress is 54” wide by 75” in length, and while this is big enough for 2 adults, most find it is not very comfortable. Queen size mattresses are the most popular, measuring 60” in width and 80” in length. This is the most common size of mattress, and is produced in every type available. King size mattresses are a luxury to most people because of the space they take up and the additional cost. This mattress measures 76” wide and 80” in length. There are two basic styles of mattresses. Innerspring mattresses have coiled springs made of metal that are layered between foam and padding. Foam mattresses use higher density foam and do not contain springs. Don’t be afraid to test out any mattress you are considering for purchase. Also, don’t let the salesperson talk you into something you don’t want or need. You are the sleeper. Mattress price does not always mean it is the best choice. The most expensive mattress may not be the most comfortable for your sleeping habits. You should however invest in the best mattress you can possibly afford, as a good mattress can last anywhere from 7-20 years, and you want those years to be as restful as possible.
