Water Bed MattressWater bed mattresses are a popular alternative to standard coil mattresses, as many people prefer to fall asleep on top of a cushion of water that completely forms around a person’s body. Other advantages include the ability to heat the sleeping surface during cold weather, better spinal support, and the lack of dust mites which normally inhabit other types of mattresses. A common myth that inhibits many people from using this style of bed in their own homes is that the care and maintenance of a water bed mattress is time consuming and difficult. While it is true that one must treat this type of mattress differently than a normal coil mattress, proper care for it is easily done, and requires a minimum of time and effort. One myth that has circulated about water bed mattresses is that the water must be changed periodically, like in a fish tank. Actually, the water never has to be drained unless the owner is moving, and this is only to facilitate an easier time transporting the mattress. The water is simply emptied out, and the mattress is folded or rolled up until it is time to reassemble the bed in the new residence. To keep the water fresh and clean between moves, all that is needed is a treatment of water conditioner every six months. Different styles of waterbeds require different formulations of conditioner, so it is important to choose the right type for one’s mattress variety. Another reason for hesitancy in switching over to a water bed mattress is the idea that it will constantly leak. In fact, the outside of the water reservoir is surprisingly thick, and is resistant to punctures and tears. Even so, it is always a good idea to keep any sharp objects away from the bed in the unlikely event that a problem does happen. Should a puncture occur, it can be easily patched using a repair kit consisting of glue and vinyl. Larger tears require more serious attention; however, one need not worry about any water damage, as most water bed mattresses come with a special liner that is designed to catch any water that leaks out. The only other thing that the owner should do in order to properly care for his water bed mattress is to clean the surface of the bed once every month with vinyl cleaner. Simply giving it a good wipe down will condition the vinyl to last a long time, and will also clean off any dirt and dust mites that have accumulated during the previous month. This is a major advantage over owning a standard mattress in that there is no possibility of parasite infestation with a water bed mattress, as it is impossible for anything to burrow through the water bladder. While owning and maintaining a water bed may seem like a daunting task at the outset, it is in reality surprisingly easy to properly care for this type of mattress. The many benefits to owning a water bed mattress are well worth the small amount of extra time and effort needed.
