Waterbed MattressesToday, there is a large number of different types and styles of mattresses that are available to the public to be purchased. There are so many choices available because consumers are almost always looking for different ways to get a better night’s sleep. Consumers appreciate the ways in which different mattresses are able to work to make them feel more rejuvenated and refreshed in the morning. Since different mattresses can work in different ways to aid in this attempt, and mattress preference is a very personal and individualize thing, many people like to explore all the different mattress options available to them. One of the repeatedly popular choices for mattresses in beds is the waterbed mattress, which is an enclosed hollow mattress, which is then placed into a bed frame and filled with water. This was a very interesting and innovative design during the time in which it was first developed, and the history of the creation and evolution of the waterbed mattresses is interesting as well. Spanning a number of years, the waterbed mattress has evolved and grown, in order to become on of the most widely used styles of mattress. During the year 1969, a man named Charles Hall submitted a patent for his invention, which was a new style of mattress. As it turned out, his invention was the primitive model of today’s waterbed mattresses. The patent came out of an idea that he had while he was in college. Charles Hall had attended San Francisco State University, and during a project for the school, he came up with a plan for a mattress that would be filled with water. Following the patent, Charles Hall began to sell his invention to anyone who was interested. Throughout these early years, Charles Hall sold his waterbed mattresses from the back of a van. Many people appreciated these mattresses because they were relatively inexpensive. A large demographic of the customers of Charles Hall had amassed included hippies. These hippies were not deterred by the fact that not only did these mattresses that were to be filled with water not have a frame, they also did not have a heater to keep the water warm and comfortable during the winter months and cooler during the summer months. Nonetheless, these mattresses continued to amass popularity among the hippie culture. However, it was this association that made a number of consumers shy away from the product during these beginning years. The hippie culture was not one that everyone wanted to be associated with, even if the design was innovative. Over the next twenty years, a number of different modification and amendments were made to the design of the waterbed mattress. When the material became more insulated and there was a framework that could be implemented with the mattress in order to give the mattress a more polished look and feel, even more people began to take notice. As a result, these factors, coupled with the end of the hippie era, helped waterbeds to become more popular in mainstream America. While some people may be afraid of becoming seasick with the use of a waterbed mattress, this is very unlikely. There are some models of waterbeds that are free flowing, but to suit the needs and desires of other consumers there are also wave-free waterbed mattresses available. As a result, people can continue to enjoy the benefits of waterbed mattresses, even if they previously had concerned about the mattresses structure and design.
